We have added the Pension Stats that Mr. Rod Cleek presented at the March meeting on the News
Board.

MEDICARE REMINDER -- You and your spouse (if MLGW is the primary carrier) must enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B upon reaching 65 if either of you is eligible.  To avoid penalties, the application must be made by contacting the Social Security office at least 3 months prior to your 65th birthday regardless of whose employment (yours or your spouse's) is being used to determine eligibility.  Please forward a copy of your Medicare card or your rejection letter (if you did not have enough quarters for Social Security) to the Insurance Dept and your records will be adjusted accordingly.

Since survivor benefits can vary based on the Plan the participant was on, it would be best if survivors who have questions about their benefit contact the Pension department directly so that their specific benefit can be properly researched and explained.

The Summary Plan Document (SPD) will be placed on the retiree website (mlgwretirees.org). It contains information regarding survivor benefits. The paragraph below is included in the SPD.

IF YOU ELECT TO RECEIVE A PORTION OF YOUR BENEFIT IN A LUMP SUM, THE AMOUNT OF YOUR MONTHLY PAYMENTS WILL BE REDUCED BY AN EQUAL PERCENTAGE. THE AMOUNT OF ANY COST OF LIVING INCREASE IN YOUR BENEFIT WILL BE BASED ON YOUR REDUCED MONTHLY BENEFIT. HOWEVER, IF YOU WERE HIRED ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2013, SELECTION OF A LUMP SUM PAYMENT WILL NOT REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF ANY BENEFITS THAT MIGHT LATER BE PAID TO A SURVIVOR. IF, HOWEVER, YOU WERE HIRED ON OR AFTER JANUARY 1, 2014, YOUR SELECTION OF A LUMP-SUM PAYMENT WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF ANY BENEFIT PAYABLE TO YOUR SURVIVING SPOUSE, BUT WILL NOT REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF BENEFITS PAYABLE TO YOUR CHILD OR CHILDREN ENTITLED TO RECEIVE SURVIVOR BENEFIT.
